Yeah, I would like to see a California team. Hopefully the league will be successful enough to expand to the west coast. As for the name it looks like they were named after the field their playing at, Scrap Yard Sports Complex. Might have been part of the deal to let them play there. But yeah, still really bad.

NPF likely to add two teams for 2017 season.

Meanwhile, the league is growing. The Dallas Charge joined prior to the 2015 season. The Scrap Yard Dawgs in The Woodlands, Tex., a Houston suburb, will make their debut in 2016, joining the Charge, the Akron Racers, Chicago Bandits, Pennsylvania Rebellion (Pittsburgh) and USSSA Florida Pride (Kissimmee/Orlando). At the Winter Meetings, the development of at least two new teams for 2017 will be discussed. In addition, the NPF will determine the location for the 2016 NPF Championship Series, to be followed by an official announcement. |
There's really a ton of options for NPF expansion. Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Southern California, the Bay Area, Portland, Seattle, New England, New Jersey(again). Nice to see the league finally doing well & looking to grow.

I'd say doubtful to expand to Alabama. With two in Texas now, I'd expect the next round to be further west, SoCal, Bay Area and the Northwest. The Northeast should be a target as well.

I never did like it when they added in travel teams or national teams. Granted, it's a way to showcase the league in different cities--if they do that, but I would prefer the league to go after new markets for permanent cities. The league needs more teams to begin to be relevant and/or marketable.

There was talk after last season finished that the NPF was looking at several potential expansion ownership groups to join in 2017. I guess they all vanished to a point where none of them even wanted to take in the Pennsylvania team. I keep hoping they get to 8 teams but they always seem a step or two behind and therefore lack getting any serious coverage.

Kind of a big fail that the league had to bring in the Beijing Shougang Eagles as a travel team to take the place of Pennsylvania. I keep hoping, as well, that more teams come into the league...that all said, they can no longer be these fly-by-night dumpster fires that only stick around for a year or two. New teams need to be well-funded and on top of it all, EVERY team needs to figure out how to market themselves out of a paper bag, because the league sure as shit isn't helping in that regard.

Yeah, it's sad that the league needs two international teams to even come close to non-joke status. Teams in US cities is what is needed. The Charge move to San Marcos was an epic failure. This league is worse than the NWSL is marketing itself and its teams, which I didn't think was possible.

The NPF is hanging on by a thread. Most games draw under 1,000 people. Without these two foreign travel teams, the league would be toast. I looked up all the folded & relocated franchises since the NPF came back in 2004. 15 total during their 15 seasons.
[first 7 teams below are one franchise to be relocated 6 times]
1.) Texas Thunder(2004-2006)
2.) Rockford Thunder(2007-2009)
3.) Tennessee Diamonds(2010)
4.) NPF Diamonds(2011) - travel team
5.) Carolina Diamonds(2012)
6.) NY/NJ Comets(2013)
7.) Pennsylvania Rebellion(2014-2016)
8.) NY/NJ Juggernauts(2004-2005)
9.) New England Riptide(2004-2008)
10.) California Sunbirds(2004, 2005 as travel team)
11.) Arizona Heat(2004-2006)
12.) Connecticut Brakettes(2006)
13.) Philadelphia Force(2006-2009)
14.) Washington Glory(2007-2008)
15.) Texas Charge(2015-17)

Not really folded, just independent and not affiliated with the NPF.

maybe this one will be temp. until the owner can find another stadium. doubtful, but an option. I'd guess and say unless some big pocket owners come in, this will be the last season for the NPF.

Sad, pathetic, but likely true.
