Amazing that GB is making strides on the medal table. Then again, when you consider the absence of half of Russia's team, it should be really no surprise that Britain is doing well.
Britain is only two Golds behind China--incredibly feasible that Team GB overtakes China by the end of the day--but not sure what China's prospects are today.

Danny Rose pulls Team GB to 12, with a guaranteed Gold in the Velodrome to come today, Britain will get to 13 with Andy Murray yet to play.

It's a residual effect from hosting in 2012. When countries host they invest extra in their sporting programs so they can perform well in front of the home crowd. That usually carries over into the next Games.

That's true, but we were already making strides before that. The money invested in sport has been more targetted and structured in recent times, which has made a big difference.
Today's been crazy. Two golds and a silver in gymnastics, Rose in the golf, a guaranteed gold/silver to come in the cycling, Murray in the tennis. By our clocks Mo Farah was after midnight last night as well, so that kinda counts too . |

It has to be little disappointing for the hosts Brazil to only have 10 medals total so far(2G, 4S, 4B). Granted they're likely to medal in football(men & women), handball & volleyball(beach & indoor), but Brazil usually doesn't have strong showings in swimming, wrestling, archery or track & field. Their 3 medals in gymnastics have been a surprise. Their 10 medals have come from:
GOLD:
Pole Vault(M)
Judo, 57kg(W)
SILVER
Canoe, 1,000m(M)
Gymnastics, Floor(M)
Gymnastics, Rings
Shooting, 10m air(M)
BRONZE
Gymnastics, Floor(M)
Judo, 100+kg(M)
Judo, 78kg(W)
Swimming, 10km open water(W)

The three lowest total medals won by a host country are:
3. Greece(2004) - 16
2. Canada(1976) - 11
1. Mexico(1968) - 9

I believe they had a "target" of ten, so they're doing quite well.

Brazil just won another bronze in the men's 200m single canoe, which is definitely one of the stranger events with that weird kneeling position they take.
I have a reaction that this is an event that probably started as people normally racing normal canoes and has evolved into an event with Charles Atlas lookalikes racing vessels that bear little resemblance to canoes using a position and stroke that they never taught in Boy Scouts.

The high kneel position has always been the preferred position for sprint canoe racers, as it offers the most biomechanical power. Here is a 1927 video showing racers using the high kneel in what you will recognize as regular canoes:
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ueeb-AC6Mkc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
You are correct that ICF sprint canoe hulls have been transformed over the past 90 years into very slender projectiles to increase speed by reducing water friction and drag. Only highly trained canoeists can stay upright in them.
Historically, in Europe what Americans called kayaks were called canoes and what Americans called canoes were called Canadian canoes. Now the abbreviations "C" and "K" are universal in racing circles, if not yet in popular culture. For example, a C-1 is a one-person canoe and a K-2 is a two-person kayak. |
