Another ugly injury. I was at the gym watching this when it happened. I think that everyone heard my gasp when she crashed. It looked like her back tire slid on the painted center line of the road while going around a corner. It had just started to sprinkle a little.

First reports were that she was OK. I thought that was a little optimistic, because it was clear that she was knocked out and then add on going headfirst over the handle bars. Now I'm seeing that she is in ICU.

The Dutch cycling federation said in a statement Van Vleuten had been taken to hospital and was being treated for a heavy concussion and three minor fractures in her spine.
"She will stay in intensive care for the next 24 hours," read the statement. "She is fully conscious and her reactions are adequate."

She tweeted that she will be fine. Horrible crash Shocked and those minutes it took the Medical staff to reach her seemed ages as she layed there

I couldn't even watch all of it. Watched it on and off because I didn't want to see anyone get hurt, yet it always drew me back nevertheless. I would have been scared to go down that in a car.

Well, if she's tweeting...Very Happy:

I can't imagine the thoughts of the other riders, especially Mara Abbott, riding past and seeing her laying there motionless.

She is so fortunate that's all the injuries she came out of that with.

It could have been (and looked!) so much worse.
