As poorly as Monty had been shooting, a Sparks fan would probably rather she try it than Whalen. Even if Whalen missed the shot she would inevitably throw her body into the nearest defender and get the call since she always does...That said, Carson's lapse was still inexcusable.

Murphy going crazy about what a great call, while the most important part of the play was Carson's inexcusable lack of defense.

Well, it was a great call. The fact that Carson got lost doesn't change the nature of the call. It was a well drawn up play with multiple good options. If Carson is in position instead of getting lost, there is a good chance she collapses down to try and stop the layup since Whalen had Parker beat solidly due to JMac's screen. If Carson did collapse then Monty has that same open look, and if she doesn't Whalen hits the layup.

It was a nice call, no question. Well drawn-up play with several options ...

But to claim it was such a great X and O timeout design is simply wrong. Yes, it was good, but a lot of high school coaches could have drawn up the same thing, so making Reeve out like a genius on this is over the top.

If Carson defends, maybe she does drop down to stop Whalen, but then she makes the pass to Montgomery harder and might even be able to close out.

To put it another way: How many WNBA coaches would have drawn up plays with no options in that situation?

I suspect that the x and o part of the game is the easy part - managing ego's, personalities and motivating players is probably what they really get paid for in the WNBA (just as college coaches are really paid to recruit teenage kids.)
