PostPosted: 03/17/16 7:07 pm    ::: WNBA Throwback Thursday - the college edition! Reply Reply with quote

Now that March Madness is upon us, I decided to do something different in RebKell's WNBA Throwback Thursday.

I'm going to share some current and former WNBA figures...when they were in college!

Here's the first: Chamique Holdsclaw with the Lady Vols!

Jennifer Azzi and Sonja Henning celebrate Stanford's first NCAA Championship in 1990...

Nancy Lieberman, Anne Donovan, and Inge Nissen at Old Dominion...

Speaking of Old Dominion, here's Ticha Penichiero getting past Stanford's Kate Starbird...

Cool

With the recent news of Candice Wiggins announcing her retirement from playing, here's a photo during her Stanford days.

Charlotte Smith of the Tar Heels!

Adrienne Pratcher of Texas A&M guarding Kentucky's Jennifer O'Neill...

That's not Kelsey Bone. If I've done my clicking correctly, that's either Adrienne Pratcher or Tavarsha Scott-Williams.

Oops! My bad! You are correct, it IS Adrienne Pratcher. I'll correct my previous post.

Adrienne's page on Texas A&M's roster:

Niele Ivey during her days at Notre Dame...

Univ. of Florida's Vanessa Hayden (#55)...

The Frazee triplets of Liberty University. Megan (#40) is the only one who later played in the WNBA...

Kristi Tolliver during Maryland's NCAA Championship Game against Duke, shortly after her last-second shot sent the game into overtime. Maryland later won the game. The dejected Duke player #43 looks like Alison Bales.

Ann Wauters on the right, and it appears to be Kelly Schumacher on the left.

The WNBA created an infographic with a nice little recap of this history of the league in preparation for the start of the season.

I wonder what the cutoff is for being an All Time leader. I love Kim Perrot and am pleased to see her listed as the steals leader, but she only played 58 games. Can you really be an All Time leader when you played fewer league games than Sydney Carter?

I thought that was a bit odd when I first saw it because I knew she only played the first 2 years (which were the 2 shortest seasons), but I didn't really think about where that ranks in relation to other players.

Although not WNBA-related, here's a poster for a team and a league that folded even before its first game! From 1975, the Indianapolis Pink Panthers of the Women's Professional Basketball Association (WPBA), released a poster advertising itself. The woman on the left is supposed to be Jolene Ammons, who played with the All-American Redheads.

Ruth Riley and Yo Griffith for a ceremonial tip-off, with then-league president Donna Orender. Since the Connecticut Sun's logo can be seen on the floor, I assume that this was during an All-Star Game.

A graceful small forward with a quick first step. Finishes with some flair, as the ball displays some magic off the glass before it goes in. Offensively poised. A main weakness at her age is playing in sync with older players who are more experienced than she is. She will have more elite camps to develop that area of her game. Her passing decisions in the halfcourt also need work.

In honor of Carolyn Peck's last game as WNBA announcer...
