Brazilian authorities pledged that a major overhaul of the city's waterways would be among the Olympics' most significant legacies. But the stench of raw sewage still greets travelers arriving at Rio's international airport. Prime beaches remain deserted because the surf is thick with putrid sludge, and periodic die-offs leave the Olympic lake littered with rotting fish.

Rio is going to be a disaster for any open water events. People taking part in test events have been saying the water is like an open sewer.

I'm reading an article on the Rio preparations in last week's Sports Illustrated.

And they manage to make the filthy water story even worse when the author of the piece says that 8,200 liters of raw sewage PER SECOND is flowing into the bay where the Olympic sailing events are to take place.

That's 2,166 gallons per second.

The Rio organizers have finally gotten their heads out of their collective asses and announced they will do viral testing on all the polluted waterways where they expect to hold Olympic events.

Quote:
A new round of testing by The Associated Press shows the city's Olympic waterways are as rife with pathogens far offshore as they are nearer land, where raw sewage flows into them from fetid rivers and storm drains. That means there is no dilution factor in the bay or lagoon where events will take place, and there is no less risk to the health of athletes such as sailors competing farther from shore.
