It's a weighted average based on the number of minutes each player played for the team.

That's from last year's summit, as evidenced by Adam Silver being called Deputy Commissioner of the NBA.

Interesting. After spending most of its 17 yrs as one of the youngest to middling teams, never thought I'd see the day the Lynx would be the oldest team in the league .... guess that's what happens with time ..... and when you trade all your youth and future picks for players above the mean/median/weighted ave age Neutral

2006 mean ave was the lowest/youngest. 2006 was the yr the Lynx opened the season with what had to be one of the youngest starting line-ups in league history-my how time flies.

And to pound that dead equine one more time ...

An athlete's prime is clearly age 27 (with exceptions, of course). Expecting a 30-year-old to play at the same level as she did at 27 is simply wishful thinking.

On average, yes. Individuals can vary greatly, however.

It's the number of players on the team who were either 30+ years old or under 25 years old as of July 1st of that season. Only Catchings is 30+ this year while only Griner is under 25.

Laughing I did the same. Was thinking that it was the average age of the league as a whole.

This makes more sense now.

I think it's clear Minnesota's goal in the offseason is to get some young talent on their team. Whalen, Augustus & Brunson likely only have a few years left.

I did the whole league a few posts earlier, including a percentage of players who were under 30.

I'm not sure about that. They talked about it with the Fowles trade, and the focus is all about the window. Trading young talent for Fowles was meant to extend the window for a few years. They are going all in on as many Championships as possible in this time and their decisions are based upon short term maximization rather than building for the future. Sort of like how the Storm did it. They aren't going to worry about the next crop until this window closes.

Where are they meant to get this young talent from, considering they're not likely to be trading any of their core stars? I'm sure they'd love to add some youth to prepare for the future, but it's pretty clear that they're trying to win now above all else. Two young pieces and a pick for Fowles; Wright for a Montgomery rental; another pick for Cruz; adding Asjha Jones rather than trusting the young posts that were already on the roster - they're all short-term moves to maximise their chances of a title right now.

The rebuild will come, but it'll presumably be around Maya Moore. That's a pretty nice place to start.

Imagine, though, the Lynx without Whalen, Augustus and Brunson. That's three crucial pieces to replace, and they all look vulnerable right now. Minnesota could easily win this series, and this title, but the window of opportunity is sliding shut pretty quickly.

I wonder if Minnesota would even be in the finals if Fowles hadn't demanded a trade there.

They are also injured. Once healthy they have a couple good years left. Especially Whalen who has proven extremely durable in her career. Just last year she was dominating.

Brunson has looked extremely good this year. She was snubbed by not being put on the all-defense team. And she completely destroyed the Merc in the WCF. Whike she is getting older, she still is far from done.

But as a worst-case scenario, say Brunson and Augustus become high end bench players for a couple years; that would mean the Lynx would be anchored by Moore, Whalen, and Fowles. Add a quality vet into that mix and they are in the talk for championships over the next few years. Or if JMac comes back, her and Brunson could easily split time.

Not to mention Peters is an underrated player who I think would find much more consistency if she was thrust into a bigger role.

Yeah, there is no need for a youth movement yet. Play it out till its empty then rebuild.

With a 100% healthy Whalen and Augustus? Yes, without a doubt.

With them injured, not a chance.

That was the reason the Lynx wanted Fowles so much. Reeve noted that Fowles adds another few years to their championship gathering window.

The issue with older players isn't ability, it's durability.

Well, Whalen doesn't have much quickness to lose, but healthy, she's still a very good point guard. But older players, especially in a physical sport like basketball, are hurt more often, and thus can't be relied on as confidently.

Both Brunson and Augustus have had serious injuries/physical ailments in the past, and at some point, staying on the court is as difficult as playing well.

This is rather optimistic, but I'm not buying.
Core vets like (my Big 3) Augustus, Brunson & Whalen don't come off the bench. If it came to that, they start and play far fewer mins. Their skills will fall off quicker then their b-ball IQs and savvy. While they are the foundation, you don't build around them, there is a need to find their replacements to support/build around Maya.

Whalen has taken a pounding during her career and it takes its toll yr by yr. She also has had chronic ankle issues (more then 1 surgery IIRCC) and she ain't going to get any quicker regardless of how close to healthy she may be over the next 2 yrs. 'Mone & Brunson have been slowed by their own different knee issues. I absolutely think they still have something left in the tank but the Championship window after this season could becomes a just a crack because I have no idea who our reserves will be.

I don't expect Jones, KG or Kelly back; Cruz will be busy with her Nat'l team. Reene is a unrestricted FA, Dev, a RFA; not sure either is on the squad next season- no inside info, just don't know. Liston, well, she's still on a rookie contract. We got a roster to fill. And I'm not feeling a roster full of a bunch of "old(er)" players splitting time with each other as the way to stay contenders Laughing

Only way the Lynx get younger or quality help is steal/sign away some young(er) free agents and get REALLY lucky with some 2nd & 3rd round picks. Hoping the Lynx hold onto their 2017 1st rnd pick, I like that draft a lot.
