from 1997 until now, how many teams that have been in the finals that have had Uconn players on them and which Uconn players did they have? Which championship teams had Uconn players and who were they?

Just curious if having Uconn players increases your chances of winning championships.

I know for specifically this season, 7 out of the 12 teams have at least one UConn player.

I forgot about Schuey being a player on consecutive championship-winning teams.

It's not that important. It's important to have good, skilled players. UConn recruits a lot of the best players every year, thus they have many of the better players in the league. Going to UConn is besides the point. The point is having good players, regardless of where they happened to go to college.

I'm curious to see who else has a streak that's even close. I'm going to leave this here, and let people analyze it all they want. I'm too tired after putting it all together.

Great list. I'd never have the patience to do that. Not to nitpick, but you missed Whalen in 2005 for CT Sun. Thanks for doing these lists. Was interesting to read. What I get out of it is that you need a Uconn star to get to the finals and to win a championship except for a couple times over the years where a team got lucky to win without one.

I don't buy Jet's claim that Uconn recruits all the best players therefore they populate the WNBA more. Sure they get a lot of good players but so do many many other teams and Uconn also recruits a lot of players that are just so-so coming in that end up becoming big time WNBA players (Dolson, Stokes for example) because they are lucky enough to be coached by the best coach there ever was who helps make them into future WNBA stars. Then you have players in college just as good as most Uconn players that flop in the WNBA because they're not coached nearly as well in college. Not saying all, just a lot.

And one of those teams is in the finals. Indiana.
One isn't in the playoff. San Antonio.
Three got booted in round 1. Los Angeles, Tulsa and Chicago.

"Need" is a a little strong in some of those cases. The 2008 Shock could have rolled over the SASS without Schumacher's garbage time minutes in the finals, for example.

Also, it's really just a handful of players making a big difference. Bird, Cash, Moore, and Taurasi account for virtually all of the championship dominance of former Hussies.

Delle Donne MVP, certainly didn't need Geno, all of the top players in the country run to UConn, to me it signals that they don't want to be challenged. Like Angel, said UConn get the top all-Americans in the country. It's the same thing that happens in the WNBA, Big Syl, ran to Minnesota because she wanted to win a championship. Dirty Diana, flopped the entire season to get 6'8 Brutus. What would happen if Angel decided to run to Chicago. Tamika Catchings, is a warrior, Tamika doesn't pull all sorts of scams to win, she plays with heart and desire, one all American, ready to take on all challenger. I really admire Tamika, and Delle Donne, she turned down UConn, got ripped apart for doing so. Teams that win Championship have 2 and 3 olympians and two all-stars on their teams. The big Australian didn't won't to play for Tulsa, she wanted to play with Candice Parker, players don't want to be challenged.

Or, they could want to be coached by a really good coach, play team basketball, have really good fan support, rather than dealing with some self centered stars who have to take every shot and be spoiled brats. I don't know that could be another viable option.

Maya did drop back to second in the league in FGA and USG% this year...

I certainly think playing for UConn is a challenge. Living up to the pressure (championship or bust every year) because perfect seasons are the norm for Connecticut. There's that expectation from fans that you have to make an impact. Then being pushed to the limit every day by an intense coach, then you throw in the team aspect. These girls are going from being the star on the high school team, to being a role player in some instances. So having to do all that, while having to keep your ego in check is something that can be very challenging for a teenager coming out of high school.

Or, they could want to be coached by a really good coach, play team basketball, have really good fan support, rather than dealing with some self centered stars who have to take every shot and be spoiled brats. I don't know that could be another viable option.

Maya did drop back to second in the league in FGA and USG% this year...

come on P. why you gotta bring maya into this discussion.

He wanted to say something about someone else, other than complain about a star who is so self-centered, she has to have all her missed shots count as makes, for a change. Wink

This should really be called "the importance of having Diana Taurasi or Maya Moore" Given they've won 6 in the last 9 years . Also called "The Importance of having one of the best players in the league." Wink

[parts snipped]

Auburn
1999: Michele VanGorp (Liberty)
2004: Le'Coe Willingham (Sun)
2005 Le'Coe Willingham (Sun)
2009: Dewanna Bonner and Le'Coe Willingham (Mercury)
2010: Le'Coe Willingham (Storm)
2013: Le'Coe Willingham (Dream)
2014: DeWanna Bonner (Mercury)

[snip]

Duke
1999: Michele Van Gorp
2010: Allison Bales (Dream)
2011: Allison Bales and Lindsay Harding (Dream)
2012: Karima Christmas (Fever)
2013: Jasmine Thomas (Dream)
2014: Mistie Bass (Mercury)
2014: Tricia Liston (Lynx)

[snip]

I could've sworn that Michele Van Gorp went to Purdue (instead of Auburn) during her freshman and sophomore years, before she transferred to Duke.
