The Women's Draw has completely imploded. 7 of the Top 10 Seeds have collapsed before the Third Round. Only Serena Williams, Simona Halep, and Petra Kvitova remain.
It's been an amazing week of upsets--and history. Johanna Konta of Great Britain defeated #9 Garbine Muguruza in the longest match in US Open History since the introduction of the tiebreaker in three hours and twenty three minutes. Konta is now on a 15 match winning streak, and lurks as a dangerous quantity in her section of the draw.
Venus Williams dialed back the clock and won back to back three set matches for the first time since 2000--and next faces one of the biggest challenges to the Serena Slam, 18 y.o. Belinda Bencic--who beat Serena this summer. Luckily for Serena, Venus is 3-0 against the youngster--and is on track to protect little sister.
As for other Americans?
Bethanie Mattek-Sands, one of the quirky players on the tour beat Coco Vandeweghe, who beat Sloane--and faces Serena next. Madison Keys faces her Wimbledon conqueror, Agniezska Radwanska--in hopes that she will be able to avenge her loss.
Another Madison, Miss Brengle gets to play promising Estonian Anett Kontaveit in order to set up a match with the winner of Venus and Bencic. Poor Shelby Rogers has to face Simona Halep next.
It'll be interesting to see if Serena can create history--or whether someone else will steal that dream, and make history themselves.

Will there be suggestions that Venus took a dive to help Serena get her Slam?
It won't be the first time people have claimed the sisters decided in advance who should win.
For the record, I don't believe it. At this point in their careers I don't think Venus has a prayer of beating Serena whether she tries or not. Serena doesn't need any help.

It's really unfortunate that Venus has drawn Serena for the second slam in a row at this stage--if she had to play any of the other players remaining, I'd really like her odds.
The thing is, Venus played really well in her last match--and she definitely has the weapons to beat Serena. Venus also knocked out one of the TWO players to beat Serena this year in the third round (Belinda Bencic.) So, indicators are pointing to Vee playing well--but this match is just a psychological nightmare.

Tons of pressure on Serena. Two veteran Italians are in the final. I am pulling for Flavia.
