Brazil finished in fourth place in Toronto and will also be boosted by the addition of another player with WNBA experience in Nadia Colhado.
While Castro Marques returns, Brazil have lost the experience of Erika Souza and Adriana Pinto, while Damiris Dantas won't play in Edmonton next month (9-16 August) either - with all three having played at the FIBA Women's World Championship last year.
At the other end of the spectrum, there was another intriguing twist to the roster announcement after 15-year-old rising star Izabella Nicoletti Leite was also announced on the list. |

Brazil basically had their "C" team at the Pan-Am games. Adding in Castro-Marques, Colhado & Leita should be enough for Brazil to make the finals at the FIBA Americas Championship. Also, at this point Brazil has not automatically qualified for the Olympics.

Not sure about the finals part - Cuba has previously beaten Brazil's "B" team and Canada are the favorites to win it all. They'll reach the semis, sure - final will be much harder to achieve with this lineup. |

The hosts always automatically qualify...

Great Britain had to jump through all sorts of hoops to be allowed in last time, and FIBA are doing the same song and dance this time around. They're probably hoping that Brazil will win the Americas tournament to save them making a decision (in both the men's and women's), but as of now they're not in.
I'm a bit surprised that people like Erika and Damiris aren't joining up, considering it could be relevant to their Olympic qualification. But maybe they're assuming that FIBA will eventually let them in even if they don't win the Americas. |

No offense but I understand them making it difficult for Great Britain, a team that almost never makes it. Making Brazil jump through hoops surprises me. I thought the "host nation automatically qualifying" thing was a universal thing for any team sport in the games. I guess not.

So it all comes down to Brazil owing FIBA money? Seems incredible.

Brazils automatic spot in the Olympic basketball competition on home soil at Rio 2016 remains in doubt after the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) gave the country a July 31 deadline for the Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB) to resolve their significant dues with the world governing body. |
