Homophobia, by no means, is unique to UCLA.
Yeah. Not the strongest statement for UCLA as a temple of higher learning either. Fire the editor.
There are many things about real life that should not be. The personal social adjustments to those things are a part of anyone's higher or lower education. The process of accepting the existance in life of so many things that should not be is what beats people down and bestows, ultimately, some measure of wisdom upon them.
College life and athletics are short term. If success at school is the goal, then shut up and succeed and then move on because the world is a brutal place and if you fuck up your education, which might be dependent on your athletic abilities and successes, you're the one who ends up losing.
That said... it's disturbing to hear that a coach at a Los Angeles university is laying down that kind of vibe WHICH INCITES hurt and anger and hostilities and all the rest. There's absolutely no place on any decent college campus for a coach like that.
So the other option is to fight. The way you fight is to get a handful of students, you don't need many, put the coach's name and remarks with some editorial comments on some big white poster board... also put the name of one David Geffen on your signs... come up with some creative chant friendly slogan and get out there and make some noise.
Geffen is one of the most powerful persons in the entertainment industry... which, believe me, rules all of Los Angeles, including UCLA, USC, city and county government, and on and on. Geffen is gay and he's on the UCLA Board of Regents. Just drop Geffen's name in some sort of loud public protest and watch the coach go POOF!
But... if you're the gay athlete, you better be ready for the backlash and the mighty task of trying to succeed alongside teammates who might have loved the homophobic coach and who now hate every fiber of your effen guts.
Either way you're fucked. And that's life.
