So the Sun basically got Montgomery, Griffin, Kelsey Bone, Alyssa Thomas & this year's 1st round pick for Whalen. The Lynx have two titles, Tina Charles has zero.

Griffin was a different trade. Griffin for Amber Harris plus Felicia Chester, who was traded to ATL for Rachel Jarry and a ATL's 2012 second rounder.
You also forgot Monica Wright in your equation.
Montgmery and Charles for Whalen and Wright.

It helps that they got the #1 pick in 2011. Liz Cambage on the Lynx and Maya Moore on Tulsa would have changed a lot of things, likely including Taj McWilliams-Franklin signing with the Lynx.

Ah, no. That's one thing that would not have changed.

Did she give a verbal agreement to the Lynx before the November 2nd, 2010 WNBA lottery? I know that she couldn't actually sign with them until the following February.

I thought she said she signed with Minnesota because she wanted to play for Cheryl Reeve.

When the Lottery was is irrelevant. Not Liz or any other rookie were going to start over Taj. It wouldn't have mattered what pick the Lynx had. Reeve had targeted Taj and Taj felt good about signing; she knew Reeve and had played w/some of the Lynx on other teams. So nothing to re-write in this case.

But that situation existed a year earlier - she knew Reeve and had played on some other teams with some of the Lynx in April 2010, but she chose to sign with New York instead of Reeve's Lynx.

The Lynx got a player who didn't essentially 'quit' on them. QED.

If Minnesota had drafted Cambage in 2011, they might have needed to go in a different direction in free agency just to fill need though. That part is not being considered. Perhaps their desire for Taj would have been outweighed by the need to pay a perimeter player to fill a more needed role. Possibly not, but I don't think anyone can say it's 100% certain Taj would have still signed with Minnesota unless you're on the Minnesota coaching staff or in the Minnesota organization.
But the main point is, getting Whalen worked out quite well, and all the criticism surrounding the Lynx after the 2010 trade was ridiculously unfounded. The talk by one or two people that Montgomery was better than Whalen has been proven years later to have been utterly ridiculous. An underrated aspect of Whalen's personality is how calm she appears on the court. She never seems rattled, and her play reflects that consistency. An extremely mentally tough player, who has meshed well with other mentally tough players...Moore, Brunson, Augustus...and a coach who demands nothing less. From where I sit in NY, I am kind of envious of what you guys have. Because you have the talent, the physical play and players who share the ball really well. It's rare to have all three, and to have the 4-year run that you guys have had. Given the ages of your core, if they all stay healthy you can probably get another 4 years at a similar level too.

Nonetheless, it would have been interesting to see a Augustus/Moore/Charles or Augustus/Charles/Cambage.._________________
