The fact is if more people watched the games the ABC would look elsewhere to cut.
Even in public broadcasting it is all about the ratings. |
I think it has more to do with the cost of the equipment in general (ie the trucks) than ratings. The W League soccer once a week game is also cut and it has had quite strong ratings. It's more an end to "sport broadcasting" in general (state Aussie rules football coverage also stopped), and will have implications for coverage of other major ad hoc outdoor events of national interest. |
I didn't know this. Thanks for the info!
I hate to suggest it but perhaps pay per view might be a solution? Or higher user tax [I know in the UK people pay a special tax for the BBC, I assume it is the same in Australia?) |
The BBC is funded by a specific license fee, and it is lavish in comparison. ABC is just funded from general revenue. I would also suspect that the ABC (and probably (?) Canada would as well), have some higher fixed costs given the rural and remote media services that the ABC is expected to deliver as part of its charter - but several rural bureaus are getting the chop too - I can't see commercial interests coming in to replace them.
While there is some budget pressure involved in the decision to make cuts everywhere (but we still have very low comparative debt), there is a large undercurrent of ideology behind the cuts (ABC haters bleat left-wing bias long and loud enough....), but moreso, weakening competition at the behest of commercial interests led by Rupert Murdoch. Australia has a very un-competitive media market.
Anyway - this is wildly off-topic, but here are a couple articles if you are interested:

Australia has a resource based economy. With commodity prices down across the board (especially energy and metals), this has really hurt the country. Also, China's growth is slowing and they're Australia's biggest customer. A business slowdown means less tax revenue, so state-supported enterprises can expect to see cut-backs. While Australia is trying to diversify it's economy (some mining companies have expanded into cattle ranching), it's going to take time. The ABC could be looking at austerity for awhile longer. |
Yeah but, they have been televising the broadcasts for 34 years. It seems like they must have re-prioritized the Australian budget and the ABC was moved down over the years.

OT I know but I've been following the hostage crisis in Sydney. I hope it ends well for the hostages.
You Aussies will be in my thoughts & prayers.

I agree. But it's a positive sign that this was close to happening.
A road game on the opposite side of the country that they will likely win with or without her did seem an odd choice of comeback game for her I have to say.

She made the team.
An issue with child care arrangements basically forced her to withdraw.

What's people's thoughts on Kelly Faris? Both in Australia currently, and back in the WNBA.
Surprised she survived the cut with the Connecticut Sun, has been a big disappointment for the Adelaide Lightning.
Don't think she'll survive WNBA camp this year.

She was always a marginal WNBA prospect

With LJ out at the Worlds she would have started for them if not for their bullshit rules about not wanting to pay for anything related to the baby.
She and Cambage will be a nice postcombo in the future. Cambage will attract the most attention wich creates more room for Abby in the post but with Abby's shooting range things will open up for Cambage aswell.

In a completely non-WNBA related question, what is the deal with Adelaide this season? While they don't have a great roster, they certainly have one that is far better than two games worse than everyone else in the league. I know they get minimal production from their imports, which puts them well behind other teams given their solid, but not transcendent domestic squad, but two wins at this point just does not look good.

I can't explain it. On paper they have a nice team. On the court they have played some very nice basketball too - just not for an entire game. They've now got a reputation for pushing everyone but getting overrun down the stretch. It's purely a mental thing IMO. Once that reputation starts, not only does it affect Adelaide in a negative way, but if affects their opponents in a positive way - such that they never feel like they're out of a game. All it takes is a slight momentum shift and you can almost feel the Lightning players go "oh here we go again" and their opponents lift.
The league is very even across the board, talent-wise, this season. It doesn't take much for a team with .500 type talent to end up at the bottom of the ladder.

It looks like Kelly hasn't even survived the WNBL season. Rachael Sporn mentioned during this week's TV game that Faris won't be returning in the new year as she has been released by the Lightning.
While releasing a player may seem like small fries in the US, over here teams rarely release imports given the cost of bringing them in and the small budgets many teams operate with. So, IMO, making the decision to cut an import player for performance issues is a pretty big deal.
Overall, I think the best way to sum up her WNBL performance is: meh! When Adelaide played West Coast in round one, if I didn't know who she was then there is no way I would thought she had come from the WNBA._________________ Hoop Shots: basketball photos from the Australian WNBL |

Wasn't there whisperings of Jackson forgoing the WNBA from here on out in attempt to extend her career in AUS?

Yeah I heard that as well from Sporn, although I don't see news about it. She may have some inside info.
As for Faris coming over here, Jeremy Moule and Kelsey Griffin had a bit of a role in it, which makes it a bit more disappointing that she hasn't done anywhere near as well as both the team and herself would have liked.
