google gmail, which has been around since 2004 (when i started using it), has made incremental changes and upgrades through the years, mostly good. it's a weird space for me because i use my gmail address any time i have to type an address online; as a result, gmail's my workhorse when it comes to filtering out spam. at the same time, pretty much all of my legitimate gmail is to some degree so much flotsam - never urgent, but somehow necessary, like receipts for online purchases.

now google has reinvented gmail. it's keeping gmail, but its new baby is inbox. i requested an invitation to try it and already received an affirmative reply. but it's an excellent example of taking a great product at its core, disassembling it and rebuilding it for a new era.

one hitch so far: i believe it has to be used in chrome when you're not on a mobile device. i'm still wedded to firefox.
