Penny Taylor and Tiffany Bias still listed as undecided on overseas play. I wonder if playing overseas would help Bias build her confidence and learn how not to foul so much. (was she that foul prone in college? or was it just the adjustment to the pros?)

Canberra Capitals forward Stephanie Talbot poised for WNBA

Quote:
The WNBA is calling Stephanie Talbot, but Capitals coach Carrie Graf has warned the Canberra forward "don't go until you're ready".

Talbot was taken at pick 33 in April's WNBA draft by defending champions Phoenix Mercury, who already have a rich Australian flavour with Opals Penny Taylor, Erin Phillips and head coach Sandy Brondello.

Quote:
A former WNBA head and assistant coach at Phoenix, Graf says Talbot can eventually conquer the WNBA. But Graf warned the 20-year-old to be patient.

"The WNBA's not going anywhere, you want to go there when you know you can stick it at a club," Graf said. "Fortunately for her, she's at a club which just won the championship, and has a history of Aussie players that stick.

"Phoenix has a great tradition with Aussies and they were smart drafting Steph because they knew exactly what they were getting ... she's someone who's going to be a professional basketballer, she's got all the goods."

Quote:
Talbot admitted the prospect of playing with Opals stars Taylor and Phillips in the WNBA was exciting, but said she's willing to wait.

"I don't want to go over there and get cut or traded, I want to make the team and stick around at the club for a while," she said.

"It's pretty open-ended, I'll go when I'm ready and when they [Phoenix] think I'm ready. It's very exciting and it helps knowing you're going to a club where there's other Aussies to help you settle in and get ready to play.

She's not the best one to be saying it. When has Graf ever supported players going to the WNBA. She's always worried about them getting hurt or becoming more committed to the WNBA, not so much that they "aren't ready".

Dare I even ask .. why does that make her not the best one to be saying it? Because her actions are consistent with her words??

How appropriate that Brittney's team is Beijing Great Wall when I like to call her the Great Wall of Griner.

Penny Taylor urges Canberra Capital Stephanie Talbot to take WNBA plunge

Quote:
Penny Taylor has urged Canberra Capitals youngster Stephanie Talbot to join her at WNBA champions Phoenix Mercury as soon as possible after she continued her strong season in Sunday's 89-84 loss to Dandenong.

The Australian Opals swingman was impressed by what she saw when she guarded Talbot at the AIS Arena, and is looking forward to playing with the former WNBL rookie of the year.

Quote:
Talbot is averaging 13.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists a game in her first season with the Capitals.

She was taken at pick 33 by the Mercury in last year's WNBA draft, but is yet to decide whether to head to the US when the next season begins in June.

The 20-year-old's high basketball IQ, speed, athletic frame and passing ability have impressed many astute judges, including Taylor.

"I think the sooner [she goes to WNBA] the better," Taylor said after her 30-point effort for the Rangers. "The more you get out in the world and experience different styles and players, it improves your game immensely.

"She's a tall guard, pretty similar to myself. She's strong and really talented, I look forward to seeing her in a Mercury jersey. She's got a lot of skill and that's just going to develop the more she plays. When she feels ready, she should get out there."

Talbot said she is still weighing up her options and is wary of making the move too soon.

"I'm waiting a little longer [to decide], we'll see where I'm at and go from there," Talbot said. "I'd love to play alongside her [Taylor], playing with her instead of against her should be fun.

if she comes over and sticks, she'd basically replace AJZ on the roster.

Six of these seven have signed extensions within the last two years and are going nowhere:

Taurasi, Taylor, Dupree, Griner, Bonner, Phillips, Bass.

That leaves:

Bias, AJZ, Kobryn, and Murphy.

Others may be Talbot (Aussie drafted in third round last year and encouraged by Penny) and James (injured last season, now playing in Germany).

Phillips and Taylor are both unrestricted free agents, Bonner was cored to prevent her being such. Details in the links in the free agency thread.

I would think the bigger threat to losing Taylor would be retirement/taking the year off to rest her body (or injury again, obviously), rather than playing somewhere else. She's probably more likely to play in 2015 and then skip 2016 for the Olympics, you would think, unless she wants to ride off into the sunset after the 2014 ring.

I wouldn't think Phillips is necessarily a sure thing. She's always wanted to be a starter (or at the very least a heavy rotation player) in the league, and she lost her starting spot in Phoenix after being the presumptive starter heading into the 2014 season. Somewhere else that could offer her that starting role might tempt her away.

Bonner will likely be back, but they obviously didn't think it was a 100% certainty or they wouldn't have bothered to use their core spot on her.

Bias in line for breakout season?

She certainly seems to be setting all kinds of records for her Publicity:Career Points Per Game ratio.
There will be opportunities galore in the Mercury backcourt this season. Hopefully that competition will bring out the best in the collection of contenders we're assembling.

Wishing the best for ALL Mercury players. However, with James and Mitchell signed, I think Bias will struggle to make the team, especially if Phillip returns.

having said that..... about Bias that is.... does anyone believe she has any trade value or is she more likely to maybe get waived and then signed by someone else? Any thoughts on who might snatch her up?

I may be jumping to conclusion's although I would think this article on the Mitchell and Francis signing would indicate Penny and Erin won't be back.

http://www.basketball.net.au/mitchell-francis-join-phoenix-mercury/

Quote:
Despite stepping into a new scene, Francis will be surrounded by a number of familiar faces at the Mercury, and is looking forward to the challenges presented by the fast-paced style of play in the WNBA.

“I know Sandy [Brondello], having been coached by her before, so for me it seems like a really good fit that I’m excited for,” explained Cayla.

“After speaking with Sandy, we discussed how much attention Brittney gets inside, and how Sandy would look to stretch the defense with my shooting range.

“To play in Phoenix alongside the likes of Brittney Griner and Candice Dupree is something that I’m super excited about.

Bias' rookie year is a small sample size (and she's a small guard), so it might not mean that much ... but still, a guard with twice as many turnovers as assists, who doesn't shoot well from outside, doesn't seem to be the stuff of a starter.

But you never know ...

It's vaguely possible that there's a coach somewhere else in the league who randomly loves her and would throw Phoenix a third-round pick to keep her off the waiver wire, but it's far more likely that she'd just get cut. It's not like she showed anything to get excited about in her limited appearances last season. That said, it's not like James did much either, plus she's been injured, so it's always possible that Bias could just beat her out.

There's still a crapload of minutes here for Phillips if she wanted to re-sign (and Phoenix haven't filled their cap space elsewhere). They'll have lost well over 50mpg from their perimeter rotation if we assume Taylor's looking unlikely to show up as well as Taurasi, and only Mitchell's remotely proven from what's been added. Even Bonner's unsigned for the moment, albeit cored.
