But maybe the return of Catchings really is going to help the Fever avoid some of these late game collapses. They put the ball in her hands up top, running their unusual off-balance horns set. Typically your two posts are at the elbows, but because Catchings - the nominal power forward - is handling the ball they use January as a de facto 'post'. Catchings entered the ball to Larkins, then made to use January as a screener in the opposite direction - a very standard move from that set. But Catchings quickly reversed course, hopped inside Glory Johnson down the lane instead of curling towards the wing, took the feed from Larkins and finished the layup. It was either a lovely play-design, or a very smart off-the-cuff cut from Catchings. Either way, it gave Indiana the lead with under six seconds left.

great read.

New post on Sun-Fever and Lynx-Shock from last night, plus mini-previews for all three of tonight's games:

The Daily W, 07/11/2014: http://wnbalien.com/2014/07/11/the-daily-w-07112014/

After Christmas picked up a knee injury in the first half (which she later returned from), Indiana started the third quarter with Catchings at small forward, and Natasha Howard at power forward, rather than just inserting Coleman as a straight swap for Christmas. So the Fever are at least willing to try Catchings as a perimeter player. But it didn't last long, and Alyssa Thomas had her best offensive stretch of the game going against Catchings. We're probably not going to see too much of Catch at anywhere other than the 4.

New entry covering last night's three games:

Stricklen's a frustrating player, because she's got all the attributes - size, range, mobility, good speed, a reasonable handle - and occasionally she has breakout games like this. She'll hit a bunch of threes, leak out on the break for transition finishes, make some hustle plays for rebounds or steals, and get everyone excited for the one hint of youthful potential on Seattle's roster. And then she'll disappear into obscurity for three weeks' worth of games and we'll all forget she exists again. Performances like she produced in this game on a regular basis would make her an all-star, or at the very least a building block for Seattle's future. Doing it once every two or three weeks just makes you tantalising and often distinctly disappointing.

New post covering Sunday's four games, and previewing the two still coming up tonight:

Quote:
Please, please ignore idiotic broadcasters who continue to use points per game as a measure of offensive or defensive excellence – as we heard the inept duo of Pam Ward and Carolyn Peck do during the broadcast of this game. Seattle have not been a good defensive team this season. Their opponents have the lowest points per game average because the Storm slow games down to such an extent that their games feature far fewer possessions than most others. On points conceded per possession, Seattle have the third-worst defense in the WNBA this year. Hence the lottery-bound record.

It was a strong team effort, and could be a big win for the Liberty's season. Of course, there've been so many false dawns for this team this year, so it could just be one good performance that'll be quickly forgotten. New York play six of their next seven games on the road, where they're 1-8 so far this year. Even in the East, if they go something like 1-6 over that stretch, their season may well be toast.

Regardless of the process, putting the team in the hands of a complete coaching novice – assisted by one of the people who helped create the current situation and guy even Sparks lifers would struggle to remember – seems a hell of a hail mary. When Phoenix dumped Corey Gaines in midseason last year, and didn’t want to hand the reins over to an existing assistant, they at least went out and found an experienced coach to take over for the rest of the year. They didn’t just send someone down from the office, hand her a whistle, and tell her to get on with it.

There weren’t many conspicuous differences to how Los Angeles played under Toler, which is hardly a surprise considering she’s only been in charge for a couple of days. Also Gary Kloppenburg, an assistant who’s been there all season, seemed to be doing a lot of the actual coaching. Toler mostly appears to be there to act as a glorified cheerleader, and provide the typical ra-ra speeches.

Ironically, Tina Charles was on-court for the WNBA’s first official triple-double since 2005. She had one taken away a couple of years ago after the video was reviewed and her actual statistics dipped well below 10 assists. Johnson’s numbers were legitimate, rather than the product of a friendly home-town scorer.

The comeback didn’t begin in earnest until the fourth quarter, and it was no coincidence that the momentum began when McCoughtry was on the bench, and continued with her playing a minor role while on the floor

And people say that she is 2nd behind Maya as a MVP candidate Rolling Eyes

Yeah, when she came back in to stay with 8:00 remaining in the 4th, the Sky's 14 point lead from the end of the 3rd quarter (61-47) had been cut all the way down to...14 points (66-52). Upon her return, the Dream immediately went on a 14-0 run to tie the game. Rolling Eyes

... says the guy who believes the +/- stat has zero value Smile However, I'll concur with the larger point - there was plenty of sucky play all around by the Dream - no need to lay the blame on Angel. Also some bad luck on decent looks that refused to go in, especially in the first half... but mostly just ugly play.

Heh, that's what I was going to say Wink.

For what it's worth, I'm aware that I can sometimes be hyper-critical of Angel. But I fully acknowledge that she's a superstar who's had many exceptional games this season. I just thought she was awful in that Sky game, and hurt the team offensively. They managed the vast majority of that 14-0 run in part because she barely touched the ball throughout the whole sequence. Admittedly she did make a couple of defensive plays during the run (and obviously the '0' is just as important as the '14' in a stretch like that).

I don't think she'd have played 35+ minutes if Cooper was there. He's shown a willingness to bench her, at least temporarily, when she slips into the ball-dominant, slightly-too-greedy version of herself that sometimes hurts her own team more than the opponent. I'm not convinced Thompson has got the guts.

She also draws a lot of attention from the defense. Even when she's not touching the ball she's occupying one or two of the other team's best defenders.

Toler the head coach would probably have to blame her general manager for having two apparently unusable options on the end of the bench, but if she stormed into the GM’s office to complain it’d probably just get confusing.
