In order to change her name, Sharapova -- who is a Russian citizen but has a green card and resides in Florida -- would have had to file a name change petition in the state, submit fingerprints, have a background check and have a hearing before a judge.

At least this case had an economic reason: to promote Sharapova's candy company.

Other athlete's name changes are usually for personal or religious reasons: Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali, Lew Alcindor/Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Ron Artest/Metta World Peace, Chad Johnson/Chad Ochocinco, Lloyd Free/World B. Free, etc.

When I first heard this last night I wanted to puke!!!!!! Can you tell how I feel about Sharapova? I am so glad she is not going to be able to use the US Open for the purpose she wanted, but as it turns out she sort of got her way just by saying that she wanted to change her name temporarily. This is ridiculous. But I will say it would have been sweet to see Maria lose in the first round wearing that moniker of "Sugarpova" around her neck.
