Duke still #1
Baylor #10
Same 25 as last week |
I'm actually pretty surprised IU didn't receive any votes.

They've been feeding off of the weak Big Ten bottom dwellers, have a solid win over Iowa, and a great win over Purdue at Purdue. If they can top Minnesota, they should garner a couple votes.

I still would like to bring up this question. How is Oklahoma NOT ranked over Rutgers?

Well, Oklahoma does have one more loss overall, and being undefeated in the Big East is (in my opinion) a bit more impressive than being perfect in Big 12 play. Although I've seen 85 teams in action this season, however, I'll get my first look at the Scarlet Knights when they play UConn next Monday.
Here's the vote I submitted in my mailing list poll earlier today. Had I been allowed, I'd have cast a two-way tie ballot for twenty-fifth place, with Bowling Green the beneficiary (my ranking from last week in
parentheses):
1. Duke (2)
2. North Carolina (4)
3. Louisiana State (1)
4. Maryland (3)
5. Rutgers (5)
6. Ohio State (6)
7. Connecticut (7)
8. Tennessee (8)
9. Oklahoma (9)
10. Arizona State (12)
11. DePaul (14)
12. Baylor (15)
13. Stanford (11)
14. Purdue (10)
15. Michigan State (16)
16. Georgia (13)
17. Utah (20)
18. Kentucky (23)
19. Brigham Young (17)
20. Boston College (18)
21. New Mexico (19)
22. St. John's (24)
23. Florida (temporarily out)
24. Wyoming (barely on the radar)
25. Louisiana Tech (waiting patiently)
Dropped out: Texas Agricultural & Mechanical (21), Minnesota (22), Indiana State (25)
Games attended: Purdue-Michigan, Indiana-Purdue
Other games seen: Duke-Maryland, Tennessee-Georgia,
South Carolina-Auburn, U. Texas San Antonio-U. Texas
Arlington, Louisiana Tech-San Jose State, North
Carolina-Virginia Tech, Florida State-University of
Miami, Kent State-Akron, Southern California-UCLA,
Arizona State-California, Metro State-Fort Hays State
(Division II), DePaul-St. John's, UC Santa
Barbara-Long Beach State, Evansville-Creighton,
Connecticut-Notre Dame |

Just wondering how losing by 10 on the road to the No. 1 team drops you a slot, while losing on the road to an unranked team moves you up a slot?_________________ "People kept saying why are you looking at Maryland, why are you even talking to them? I don't get how Tennessee and LSU have lost to unranked teams and can be ahead of UConn who's worst loss is to Rutgers, a legit top ten team. I will admit that the pollsters are having a tough year with all the upsets and what not.

Because the SEC is a better conference than the Big East, and partly as a result, both Tenneessee and LSU have more pretty-good wins. I'd put LSU over UConn, but UConn over Tennessee, esp after the loss of Hornbuckle.

I don't see how the SEC is that much better than the Big East. You have UConn and Rutgers, then DePaul, St. Johns and Pittsburgh. Also, Louisville, Marquette, Villanova and Notre Dame are no cupcakes.

My answer to that question is that the poll voters (in both polls now) must not really believe in Maryland. I'm not saying they're right, but it's the only explanation that makes sense to me.
If you look at Maryland's schedule, you can see how that opinion might be formed, too - Maryland has exactly one OOC RPI top 50 win, and only three OOC games against RPI top 100 schools. Compare that to, oh, Oklahoma, which has 4 OOC RPI top 50 wins and 6 OOC RPI top 50 games (strangely, two of them against New Mexico, but that's because of the preseason WNIT), plus 4 more against RPI 50-100 schools. Sure, you can say that Maryland plays a tough schedule in the ACC, but there are only two teams in the RPI top 10 with fewer games against RPI top 50 teams, and there is no team in the RPI top 20 with as many games against RPI 200+ teams.
Again, I don't know that this kind of analysis really proves anything about how good Maryland is, and Maryland's losses all have come against RPI top 5 teams. Still, it's the kind of thing that could make a poll voter hesitate to give the Terps a higher ranking.

Well, Maryland's ranked #4, so the voters must believe a little ...
Who knows what the polls really mean, but LSU has fewer losses and more wins against ranked teams.
