Stephens with the upset! Williams very gracious post-match.
Two very interesting semis tomorrow.
Azarenka vs. Stephens
Li vs. Sharapova
Should be fun!

Sharapova is hitting poorly, Li is on her game.
Li leads 6-2, 5-2 and serves for the match.
And serves it out!
Apparently, Maria didn't screech loudly enough.

Asked after the match why she needed the medical timeout, this was Azarenka’s response:
“Well I almost did the choke of the year right now. At 5-3 having so many chances, couldn’t close it out. I’m glad I could just turn it around. I just felt a little bit overwhelmed realizing that I’m one step from the final and nerves got into me for sure.” |
Sounds like a pretty dubious use of the medical timeout rule to me.

Injuries and injury timeouts are a problem. No one wants a player to retire if they can be quickly treated and continue, but physical and mental fitness should be an important part of the game. The rules are bad and their implementation is sometimes worse. A cramp is not an injury but a pulled muscle is. If you're not sure don't worry; you can call for a medical evaluation time out.
The first time I ever saw this as an issue was in 1976 at the US Open, the last year it was played at Forest Hills. (I was a ball boy back then, and though I wasn't working the match, I was sitting courtside.) Ilie Nastase was playing journeyman Hans Pohmann on a very hot day, With Nastase up 2 sets Pohmann started cramping early in the third set. Pohmann battled gamely getting the crowd behind him. Nasty complained bitterly that Pohmann was taking too much time and should be DQ'ed (and he was probably right). But Pohmann wasn't DQ'ed and in fact pushed the third set to a tiebreaker, but Ilie eventually won straight sets. Ilie became even more hated.
Azarenka's biggest problem was answering questions after the match honestly. She may or not be fined, but she certainly will not be the fan favorite against Li Na.
Also, tennis isn't the only sport with injury gamesmanship issues. Whether it is the defender in football who feigns an injury to slow down an up tempo offense or the poor foul shooter that is hurt so badly that he/she can't take a foul shot, but can return at the next play stoppage.

I guess we will now see how Azarenka reacts to a long delay after Li Na's injury.

Congratulations to Victoria Azarenka, repeat Australian Open winner 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
It's 3:30 AM, time for bed. This tournament really screws up my sleep.

That was a frustrating match to watch. Azarenka was clearly not at her best. Li was the essence of inconsistency. She would look great and hit phenomenal winners and then when you think she's got it together she starts spraying forehands all over the outback.

Azarenka is the first #1 seed to win a slam event since Serena Williams at Wimbledon in 2010.

was pulling for Na to win, but as you said, she was too inconsistant at times to pull it off. Looking foward to the men's final tomorrow.

I'm not getting up at 3:30 for the men like I did for the women.
This will make 30 of the last 31 men's slams won by a top 3 seed. There's still no depth on that side.

and for about five years it was simply Federer vs. Nadal in the men's tournament. at least Djokovic & Murray are starting to win grand slams now. Only Juan Martin del Potro has won a grand slam in the past 9 years that wasn't the big four. del Potro, Ferrer, Tsonga & Berdych are probably the next four best in the men's field. And I keep waiting for John Isner to breakthrough and make his mark.

There were more ebbs and flows in that match. Geez. Every game was a momentum changer, it seemed.
Was rooting for LN to win, for various reasons. Bummer.
Aussie Open screws up the sleep habits...

Well, at least the US female tennis crew has three up and comers now in Fighting Jamie Hampton, who might have beaten Azarenka if not for her back trouble; Sloane Stephens, the world's most famous personal economist; and super talented Madison Keys, who might turn out to be as close of a cross between Serena and Venus as one can reasonably expect.
On the men's side, on the "whatever happened to Donald Young?" front, there's this tragedy: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/bruce_jenkins/04/26/donald.young/index.html
