For me it is between Ivory Latta, Cappie Pondexter, and Courntey Paris. For now, I'll go with Ivory Latta, since UNC is undefeated and she has played great in big games.

Fowles made the poll over Monique Currie? Not that it changes my vote (Latta)...

Courtney and Ivory have both dominated this season for the most part. But Courtney is 2 years younger. So my vote goes to her. Ivory was not this good her freshman year. Its almost scary how good Paris could be...

I think it's too early to say, and I'd appreciate a few more choices being offered. But right now, my vote would be for Candice Wiggins of Stanford.

Stanford graduated 80% of its scoring last year, and the team began this year somewhat in disarray. Candice has been the reason Stanford is still atop the Pac-10. She's in the top 5 nationally in scoring, raising her average more than 4 points per game over last year. She's on course to become the highest scoring player in Stanford history. She's scored over 1,000 point in her career, at just the mid-point of her 2nd year. And she's still only 18 years old.

She's one of those players who can change the course of a game, yet she works effortlessly and seamlessly within the team concept. And she's totally humble and non-effacing, focusing on what her team needs, not on her own stats. Those of you who haven't seen her play are missing something special.

Tasha Humphrey should be considered. She's carrying the burden of being UGA's only frontline player--20.8 and 9.2, can shoot the 3 (17-34) and lead the fastbreak. My favorite SEC player.

I'm biased, but if you check the stats (and particularly note what percentage of her team's offensive burden she carries, her shooting percentage, and how much she scores against her team's best opponents - e.g., 27 on Saturday against a top 15 team), there's an awfully strong argument for Cappie Pondexter.

One thing that doesn't show in the stats, I should mention, is defense, particularly because the RU defensive style tends to lead to turnovers that aren't steals - walks and bad passes.

If you don't believe me, ask Doug Bruno, the most recent victim:

"Cappie is the player of the year by me," Bruno said. "I'm not saying that because she's from Chicago and I'm from Chicago, or she's from the Big East and we're from the Big East.

"You watch what this kid's been doing all year percentage-wise, field goal-wise, 3-point-wise, but (also) decision making-wise. Her decision-making is awesome. She's making a lot of very simple plays, and great players know how to make the simple plays. These are all reasons why she's got my vote for player of the year."

Hmmm...it depends on who I'm watching on any given night. All of the players mentioned are great. It is hard to choose. But for the record...Tasha Humphrey...she is her team's entire front line...

i don't see enough separation to make a choice at this time, but agree humphrey should be on the list.

I agree that Tasha should be in the mix somewhere but the best player I've seen this season is Seimone Augustus. Fowles I could see if you were listing ten candidates...she misses the cut for five, IMO. I wish Paris and Wiggins were on TV down here more often.

Either satellite provider will allow you to see them plenty. Very Happy

For DirecTV, would that be Full Court or Sports Pack? I've considered both but I wasn't sure how many women's games were carried on Full Court and I'd heard that Sports Pack was incredibly blackout-happy.

Full court is really only good for the NCAA's, every now and then they have a women's game, but not normally. The Sports pack is the ticket, and there are hardly any blackouts of women's games(NCAA that is).

I voted for Courtney, which will surprise nobody. I'm a little surprised that the LSU pair didn't get more play.

Maybe people think, each of the LSU players has another star on her team to take pressure off her, while players like Wiggins and Paris don't.

Actually, Candice Wiggins has an accomplice - Brooke Smith.

Brooke scores 17.6 points ppg, and leads the team in rebounds (7.3/game) and blocks. And (no bragging here, just a statement of fact) she's got the greatest hook shot in the country.

Candice and Brooke are by far the major offense for the Cardinal, along with 3-point specialist Krista Rappahahn. (Rap did make a 2-pointer last week, her first in over a month.)

But the burden of scoring has definitely been more on Wiggins this year than last.

Yeah, Brooke has impressed me this year. Jillian Harmon has also been solid as of late.
