It was her 15th major title; the rest of today's active players not named Venus have a total of 12.
Henin, Cljsters, and Sharapova have 15 GS singles titles combined; Serena has 15 by herself.
Davenport, Hingis, and Capriati have 11 GS singles titles combined; Serena has 15 by herself.
She is 15-4 in GS singles finals and 13-0 in GS doubles finals. CLUTCH!

As CTH has noted, she deserves her own thread.

In 1987, thirty year old Martina Navratilova won Wimbledon and the US Open, losing just one set in the two tournaments. She had won at least two grand slams every year for six consecutive years. She finished the year with 17 grand slam singles titles. Despite her age, many people thought she might be able to top Margaret Court's 24 titles. She seemed sure to surpass Helen Wills' 19. As most of you know, Navratilova won only one more grand slam in her career, in 1990 at Wimbledon.
The point being, as great as Serena is and as well as she has been playing, her run is very probably near its end. She's not going to catch Steffi Graf, who now has 22 grand slam titles in the open era. She's not likely to catch Navratilova and Chris Evert, who each have 18.
But it's been a heck of a ride |
I hope she wins another!! By the way, Azarenka is really tough. I saw her match against maria sharapova and that was a really tough match too.

I see Serena winning a few more titles. She may tie or even pass Evert and Martina, but I still don't consider her the best women's player ever as McEnroe continued to say during the championship match.
I'd rank her 3rd:
1. Navratilova
2. Graf
3. S. Williams
4. Evert
5. Billie Jean King
6. Court
7. Wills
8. Monica Seles
9. Goolagong
10. Venus Williams

Yeah, I was actually shocked when I read she only had 15 GS titles. I thought she was at least bearing down on whomever was number one.

One flaw with your analysis, plight - the comparison.
Serena now has won 14 matches in a row against top 5 players, 10 matches in a row against top 2 players, and 5 matches in a row against no. 1s. Martina was not playing at that level in 1987. More importantly, Graf and other challengers were much younger than Serena's challengers with plenty of time to grow and develop (e.g., Graf turned 18 in 1987; by contrast, Sharapova, Azarenka, etc. are in their early- to mid-20s).

I don't necessarily disagree. But I do think the notion that Serena will win more than a couple more slams is wishful thinking.
