and if early reports are correct, this will be an Olympic record in terms of largest crowd. about 85,000 are expected(not quite a sell-out).

and the record was broken today, over 80,000 announced.

I don't usually watch soccer, but when I do, I drink Dos Equis.

Congrats to our side! Very Happy

Heck of a game, a lot of fun. Would've liked to have seen a Japan equaliser, purely because an extra half-hour would've been nice. For a final that good, I didn't mind having to watch most of the basketball semis on tape.

Canada winning the bronze game was daylight robbery.

can only imagine that Canada might have won gold as well if they advanced instead. Japan's defense wasn't 100% and Sinclair & Co. would have scored 2 or more goals vs. Japan.

Japan had already beaten Canada 2-1 in the preliminary round.

Plus Japan dominated much of the final against the US, while Canada were played off the park for the vast majority of the bronze-medal playoff by France. Usual nonsense.

Must have been all those sour grapes Team Canada was eating following the loss to Team USA.

The introduction of Hulk into the match has tipped the field in Brazil's favor. The way Neymar is commanding the resulting increased space, the tying goal seems only a matter of time...

And Peralta bags his second in the 75th minute, as Brazil lost track off a free kick. Will be a scramble now...

ETA: Hulk pulls one back just into extra time. Mexico leads 2-1 in the waning seconds...

For the final act, Oscar heads an excellent cross from Hulk over the bar. Mexico claims its first gold medal of the fortnight in London and its first-ever medal of any type in Olympic men's soccer...

South Korean denied medal over politics

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/12/sports/olympics/south-korean-soccer-player-park-jong-soo-denied-medal-over-politics.html

Quote:
Mr. Park, a midfielder, played all 90 minutes of the game on Friday in Cardiff, Wales, then was photographed carrying a sign that read, Dokdo is our territory. The islands, called Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan, lie in an area of rich fishing grounds and natural gas deposits.

Mr. Park faces investigations by both the International Olympic Committee and FIFA, soccers governing body, both of which strictly enforce rules forbidding athletes from making political statements on the field.
