don't understand why Simon & Johnson aren't playing. but I'm very happy that Tamame has 13 boards in just 22 minutes(even though it's against the JNT).

Not just 13 boards, but 7 offensive boards at that. Granted she's not going to be averaging 7 in WNBA play, but it's a good sign when you have a player who crashes the offensive boards hard.

Edited: now it's been changed to 8 offensive boards.

Maybe they are cut but it hasn't been announced yet.

Prahalis/Riley: 13 assists to 5 turnovers. Not bad.

Reed also had a solid 11 points. The post numbers might be inflated a bit due to the extreme height disadvantage of the Japanese.

Dee's back-up is locked in...now it's time to figure out who's gonna be starting PG, back-up PG, starting SF, back-up SF, back-up PF, and back-up C. Laughing

Based solely on this game:
PG: Riley, Prahalis
SG: Taurasi, Gray-Lawson
SF: Houston, Hornbuckle, (Taylor)
PF: Dupree, Bonner
C: Stanford, one of [Tamane/Warley/Thomas]

Although I would rather two of [Tamane/Warley/Thomas] over Hornbuckle (but don't think they will especially since they involved a 2013 2nd-Rd Draft Pick in her acquistion).

My choices:
PG: Riley, Prahalis
SG: Taurasi, Gray-Lawson
SF: Bonner, Houston (Taylor)
PF: Dupree, either [Warley/Thomas]
C: Stanford, Tamane

met some of the japanese national team (or was it some sunflower team ? - close to their national team) when they toured australia about 10 years ago - the girls were great and stayed and helped train some juniors.

lovely group of people and the bonding helping the juniors was outstanding.

and that dead eye - two handed 3 point shot !

Alexis Gray-Lawson all over Japanese national team in Phoenix Mercury's win

Quote:
Last season, the Mercury opened it season with a 96-52 win over the JX Sunflowers of the Women’s Japan Basketball League, as it proved to be a breakout game for rookie Alexis Gray-Lawson, who had 16 points, nine steals and six assists.

Quote:
Mercury coach Corey Gaines talked with Prahalis at times during the game and said she didn’t make the same mistakes twice.

“She’s got a lot to learn,” Gaines said. “There’s spurts of stardom there, but you don’t need spurts, it takes time, her gift the thing she has is passing, is something that can’t be learned, it’s a gift.”

While a healthy Diana Taurasi, Candice Dupree and DeWanna Bonner watched from the sidelines in street clothes, Alexis Hornbuckle sat out with a left foot sprain, and Oregon draft pick Amanda Johnson was out with a concussion. Dymond Simon, the former Arizona State guard, did not play with a left ankle sprain but has been enjoying her invitation to training camp.

Mercury Oust Japan 100-73 In Exhibition: http://arizona.sbnation.com/phoenix-mercury/2012/5/9/3008952/mercury-oust-japan-100-73-in-exhibition

"The game was over after one due to the Alexis Gray-Lawson Show. From the opening tip the Mercury had a clear physical advantage over the Japanese National Team. After the first quarter the score was 34-16 Mercury and they never looked back....Playing off of the two headed point guard group of Samantha Prahalis and Andrea Riley points came to Gray-Lawson through the flow of the offense. She had a monster game shooting the ball with 34 points total. The offense flowed through her as she played 34 of the 36 total game minutes."

Lex is fighting for a job and she really wants it.

Zane Temane has hands of stone. Only 4 recorded TO's but geez the rebounds she missed were frightening.

Riley was more under control than I've seen in the past. Could she finally be over her college years of "it's all about me" (and I blame her College Coach for a lot of that attitude).

Sammy Prahalis wearing Michele Timms' number, oh hell no.

IIRC, there was some announcement of players being recognized (Circle of Honor type thing), yet notice that jersey numbers would not be retired.

This was when the banner honoring Cheryl Miller (coach), Jen Gillom (22), Bridget Pettis (32), and Michele Timms (7) went up.

MB, there had been a separate jersey hung in the arena to honor Timms (don't you remember the "hefty bag"?). It disappeared some time ago.

Putting up 34 points shows that she really wants that spot and knows that she needs to provide scoring with Penny out. Maybe she will do better this season playing more at the 2 spot instead of the 1

As I pointed out earlier, she had a similar great game last year in the preseason against the Japanese Sunflowers. It didn't seem to equate to a great year.

How are 16 points and 34 points remotely similar? Confused

He swears he's seen this before. The quickness with the ball, the zeal to get to the basket, the tenacity on defense. Mercury coach Corey Gaines says rookie Alexis Gray-Lawson's play is reminding him of former Mercury star Cappie Pondexter. He brought up the comparison after Gray-Lawson, a training-camp invitee, scored a team-high 16 points in the Mercury's blowout win over Japanese women's professional team JX Sunflowers on Tuesday.

(2011) 16pts., 1reb., 6asts., 9stls., on 5-13 shooting, 1-5 from 3, 5-8 FT compared to (2012) 34pts., 7rebs., 3asts., 1stl. on 11-21 shooting, 3-5 from 3, 9-11 FT (that's more than double pts...both great games but hardly "similar").

And the 2011 game was against a Japanese exhibition squad while the 2012 game was against the Japanese National Team (albeit, not a good one).

No. Tina Thompson had over 40 during the 2001 pre-season.

If you think great games are only about points, then maybe you don't think last year's preseason game was as good. In that game Gray-Lawson played 10 minutes less while competing with Bonner and Dupree for scoring. She also had 9 steals, 6 ast with only 1 to, and put up a +34 on the +/-
