Santiago awaiting WNBA Draft
| Quote: |
| Santiago participated in a predraft camp in Denver earlier this month at the Final Four. She says she played well against the other top draft prospects and showed the ability to play on the perimeter by hitting some three pointers and driving to the basket off the dribble. Santiago says she also pleased the scouts with her height. "I did hear that a lot of people were impressed with my size. Because I am listed at 6'1" so I think a lot of people thought, oh she's going to be 5'10". I'm actually about 6'2" said Santiago. |

The article that was linked is from 2010. I'd like to read the article you go the quote from is you can find it again, I tried looking through the site and I couldn't find it. |
Okay, I fixed it. http://www.ksby.com/news/santiago-awaiting-wnba-draft/ |
Thanks. I'm interested to see if she has gained enough interest to get drafted or picked up for training camp. I hope she is able to prove herself, I think she has what it takes to make a roster._________________ DeLisha Milton-Jones is my favorite player

Tulsa Shock seeks talent upgrade through WNBA draft
| Quote: |
There are two schools of thought in regard to draft philosophy: 1, Take the best player available. 2, Try to fill a specific need.
"This year, for me, it's 'let's try to get best player, because we weren't very good,' " Kloppenburg said, adding that he wants to upgrade the talent level.

Then you also believe that Monica Wright is a young Katie Smith, because he's said that as well.
Like any WNBA coach, you take what he says with a grain of salt. Just because he's a WNBA coach doesn't mean he's somehow wired against being wrong. He's been wrong quite a few times WRT drafting and personnel decisions. This is the same man who traded away an Olympian less than six months ago.

Yes. Interviewing potential draftees is common practice. |
thanks, pilight.
i'm curious about how this 'job interview' might go. i would suppose the main thing to be approached is the 'you're not going to start and how will you handle that?' conversation; maybe 'how do you feel about playing so far from home?' but what other subjects do you think may be approached?

Final first round 2012 wnba mock draft from an Occasional fans point of view…
1. Los Angeles – Nnemkadi Ogwumike
2. Seattle –Shekinna Stricklen
3. Minnesota – Shenise Johnson
4. Tulsa – Samantha Prahalis
5. San Antonio – Glory Johnson (thought I think Devereaux Peters 2time Big east DPOY can do a little more)
6. Phoenix – Tiffany Hayes
7. New York – Devereaux Peters
8. Washington – Riquna Williams
9. Connecticut – Damiris Dantas
10. Washington – Lynetta Kizer
11. Indiana – Kayla Standish
12. Minnesota – Sasha Goodlett
I Have Natalie Novosel falling to the dream at number 14, because I think Khadijah Rushdan will be the 13th pick by Los Angeles, shes a big guard that will Rebound and defend. |

and will also be available at LA's other second round picks. If Novosel is available at 13, she would be the pick.

Johnson, Williams ready for WNBA Draft
| Quote: |
Johnson, who has been trying to contact Williams, is looking forward to "put some things behind us" when she sees her college teammate. But the feeling isn't mutual.
"We don't have much to say," said Williams, who wouldn't discuss the reason she received the suspension. She's currently preparing for the draft in her hometown of Pahokee. "I'm just staying positive about everything from here on out." |
| Quote: |
| When asked what she would say to a WNBA coach or general manager that asked her about the suspension, Williams replied, "Nothing." Instead, she will just point to her illustrious career at Miami, where she led the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring as a junior with 21.7 points per game. |

Stanford's Ogwumike expected No. 1 in WNBA Draft
| Quote: |
"Assuming that that happens and I end up in L.A., I think I'm looking forward to playing with a lot of experienced posts," said the 6-foot-2 Ogwumike, who averaged 22.5 points and 10.2 rebounds this season. "I can still elevate my game at this point, but I think it will be good to see what I can learn from people."

Natalie Novosel Q&A
| Quote: |
What do you expect to be some of the biggest challenges or adjustments at the next level?
I think one of the biggest challenges is transitioning from the team concept at the collegiate level to the WNBA being a business—people are not necessarily going to wait for you to get something right, you must help yourself, so you must take your chances and make the best use of them when you have them! |

well, this does give one pause... The fact that the team voted to leave her behind also says a lot about the incident. It will be interesting to see the interaction, or lack thereof, tomorrow. Kind of sad, really, to spend that much time working for a common goal and have it end so badly.

I agree this is one of the best mock drafts I've seen. I'm going to do one more later and it won't make half as much sense as this one. Good job!

Stricklen's now movin' on up!
If I were MIN, I'd take Prahalis, not because they need her, but because she appears to be more valuable in a trade. WAS, NY, TUL, and their favorite trading partner PHO, all could be willing to make a trade for a PG. Can't say the same thing about a 2-3, who could be a great surprise, but she won't get the playing time in MIN to prove that and raise her trade stock.

last attempt at a mock draft, this draft might not be exciting player-wise but its been the toughest to mock in years. And yes I'm aware some of my choices might be whack. Second round just for fun since its pretty much just guess work. Reading all the articles and what coach/GMs have said has left me more confused.

Minn.- G. Johnson
Tulsa- S. Stricklen

Trade value is subjective (like about everything else about this draft). Besides what exactly do WAS, NY,TUL or PHO have to offer Minnesota? Can't see any of them giving up their '13 first round pick for Prahalis. So where's the value? Why waste time if people have nothing of value to offer.
Whoever wants Sammy, can just draft her.
At this point why should the Lynx worry about upping the 'trade stock' of a player they have plans for

Well, one of the points I was making was that MIN doesn't really have the ability to raise the trade stock of any of their draft picks because their team is so overloaded.
Therefore, the trade value that their pick has coming in is where the trade value will remain. So if Prahalis' is already considered the best PG in the draft, and good PGs are rare, and several teams are in need of an upgrade at PG, then I would say Prahalis has more trade value than the other 2-3s.
The other point I was making was that MIN doesn't really need anything. They're good to go for another Championship, as I'm picking them to repeat. (They probably could use a backup post for some 'Taj Insurance', but burn a #3 pick for that?) Therefore, it makes sense to try to defer their draft picks to later years.
Basically, I say do the same thing with their draft picks as they did with Hornbuckle and Houston. They won't get equal value in return, but it's better than losing them for nothing in free agency or in an expansion draft.

WNBA draft: Mystics have 8th and 10th picks

After acquiring several interior players and more experienced bench options this offseason to complement forward Crystal Langhorne, Washington native Monique Currie and guard Matee Ajavon, Lacey would like to add a three-point shooter if possible.

| The more I look at this draft the worse it gets. There aren't even decent sleepers. I kinda like Shey Peddy (Temple) and Antonia Bennett (Florida A&M), but even they seem meh.

I think Lin Dunn called Shenise Johnson a sleeper. She probably has a different definition of sleeper than most people. |

And my point was, we have no reason to be worried about trade stock. We’re overloaded w/talent and in position to add more. If you want someone I have or can draft, step up before 1pm ct tomorrow & make an offer. If you no one does, we move on to stockpiling more talent.

You might think she does. I don’t and it would appear most teams don’t either. But we’ll see on draft day. Prahalis only has more value then other 2-3s relative to what someone wants to offer.

It could make sense. But only if we have willing partners. If not, we move on & continue to stockpile.

Likely not w/the #3 pick but with the rest of our picks, sure if you can find other teams willing.
You’re talking about two 4 yr vets who were don’t carry all that much value nor were in high demand. Houston was a swap of 2012 2nd rnd picks & Hornbuckle got us the Merc 2013 2nd rnd pick. If I'm going to have to "settle" for "something", then w/the #3 pick, I'll take a player that is most valuable to me now. Value of the #3 in 2012 has > value then offer of some 2nd rounder in ’13 or ’14.
As for free agency, most of our roster is still on rookie contracts or RFA in status. Our Big 3 UN-RFAs will likely be together for at least 3 more yrs or as long as they want to be here. As for potential expansion, can’t do anything about that.
Anyway Happy Draft Day everyone

If the Lynx are keeping the player at the #3 pick, I believe they'll attempt to trade the #12 pick in the same way they traded the #13 pick last year.
Last year the Lynx drafted Jessica Breland and traded her to the Liberty for Angel Robinson and a 2012 pick. I'm gonna take a guess that this year's Angel Robinson will be Kiara Buford. |

| She's got potential, but they can keep her. 2012 is a crap year for PGs, but 2013 and 2014 should be good.

WNBA: Shock expects to get a good player with fourth pick
| Quote: |
Kloppenburg put together a mock draft in an attempt to divine who will be available at No. 4. But, he said, "it changes when you get into the draft. Somebody does something funny and it changes everything."
|
| Quote: |
| "The player there could help us and play a lot," he said. |
Go Sammy!
| Quote: |
"Who it's going to be, I don't know. There are a group of about five or six that we really like in that group."
|
It should be 2-3.
| Quote: |
Asked about needs, Kloppenburg said, "We felt like we weren't just a real good outside shooting team, so that's an area we are really looking to try to improve is our 3-point shooting and just shooting in general, our field goal percentage."
The Shock ranked last in the league in field goal percentage (.396) and next-to-last in 3-point percentage (.284) last season. Kloppenburg said he wants to look at players who can shoot the ball better, and he wants to implement a system that will put players in position to get good shots.

John Klein: This draft won't be a game-changer for Shock
| Quote: |
"Next year could really be something," said Tulsa coach Gary Kloppenburg.
"I don't think you are going to see people giving up picks for next year to get picks in this draft," Kloppenburg said.
|
| Quote: |
"I think the advantage is that she (Cambage) will come here in good shape because she'll come to us straight from the Olympics," Kloppenburg said. "She'll come here ready to go."
|
| Quote: |
"I think after those first two picks get taken, and the dominoes start to fall, we'll know more," Kloppenburg said. "I really believe there are some very good players out there all the way down to the second round.
"I think this draft is pretty deep."

2012 WNBA Draft Prospect: The Curious Case Of Riquna Williams
| Quote: |
| Regardless of the situation that got Williams suspended for the tournament, her behavior in handling the aftermath of the situation makes me think she might not be the best teammate, the most coachable player or the greatest locker room presence wherever she lands next. She has completely cut off her association with Miami other than attending online classes from home? She won't talk to her coach? Or her teammates? Or tell us what really happened to cause this huge rift in the first place? |

| I was not that high on Riquna Williams before the suspension. I prefer shooting guards who are good at shooting. Copping an attitude should push her out of the first round.

That means she'll be a Spark. -_-
Would rather have Hayes or Novosel.

Hayes has always been the better prospect. The suspension pushes Novosel ahead of her, IMO.
