On second thoughts: *looks at roster* Hmm, I wonder if she'd be interested...

With the possible injury to Penny Taylor, according to the other thread they are waiting for a better MRI before making a decision. How does her being out affect the team, I know she is a big part of the team and I assume their isn't another Penny Taylor waiting in the wings to take her spot, who do they take if she is indeed injured? What does this do to team, obviously this hurts them against the US National team, but are they still better than most of the countries, should they still be medal contention or does it drop them off completely?

They've cut it to 20 for training camp: http://www.basketball.net.au/index.php?id=302&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=2424&tx_ttnews[backPid]=283&cHash=ec8a68fc44

Taylor and Penaluna both out injured; Poto and Flanagan cut.

Mildly off-topic, Great Britain cut their 20 to 18 a couple of days ago as well, with one of the two cuts being Stanford's Bonnie Samuelson (don't ask me why).

ACL injury just prior to what would have been her debut season in Europe.

She's signed with Bulleen again for 2012/13 season.

Glad to see a couple of PGs cut from the squad, there is a huge gap between Harrower, Richards, Macleod and 'the rest'.

Her chances have certainly improved, then again so have those of Beijing Olympian Rohanee Cox.

It may depend on what coach Graf goes for - youth (Jarry) or experience (Cox).

Yeah i think she means Suzy Batkovic. She had a good season(MVP australian league) so she will have to step up in the scoring department with PFT out.

Correct. The Melbourne area is where basketball is by far the strongest in Australia, but Victoria in general is known for producing a disproportionately high number of our best across all sports

Opals, Graf think big
Quote:
''Abby Bishop and Marianna Tolo were Canberra based and Suzy Batkovic has family here and we've been bringing Liz Cambage up to Canberra numerous times over the last year or two as an emerging Opals talent as part of our high performance program'' Graf said.

''This was a unique [opportunity] that we had - that was certainly cost-effective - to get our young post players together with Suzy Batkovic, one of our veterans, in a good format at the AIS.''

i.e. they have cut:
- Rohanee Cox (she was always going to be a long shot)
- Cayla Francis (not a Carrie Graf style of player)
- Natalie Hurst (no surprise there)
- Kristen Veal (ditto)
- Carly Wilson (I thought she might last until the final step due to Penny being out, but she has been out of form lately)

Good news for Jarry and Zavecz.
The one thing I would not have predicted was Jenni Screen surviving this long. What a sad state our 2-guard stocks are in when Screen is on the verge of an Opals spot Embarassed

No mention of Phillips, which I presume is only because she'll be in the US during the camp/games they're talking about. Might've been worth pointing that out to people, though.

Short tv story that aired tonight about the Opals (mostly featuring Liz, also with Liz's mum, LJ and Carrie Graf):

Hey, Aussies, what are the prospects of Sara Blicavs making NT? Obviously not this year but some time in future. Having seen our depth or lack of one on the wing, am looking in to players with Latvian roots who could be easily naturalized. Very Happy

Haha... you keep your hands off her, Johny!
I haven't seen a great deal of her in person but she has been talked about as one of the better graduates from the recent AIS class and put up some decent WNBL numbers so she is one I will be watching closely next season.
Her mum was an Opal and she has already represented Australia on some junior teams so it might be a struggle to bring out her inner Latvian.

Streamed using the link above. I'm not showing it live yet, but Cambage tweeted an hour ago that it was game time so it shouldn't be far off.

It's on now but the feed is crappy. Refreshes every like 5 seconds. Who the hell uses Silverlight now?

Starting 5 - LJ, Batkovic, Snelly, Harrower...and I couldn't make out the last player. Cambage and O'Hea off the bench.

So Australia lost to Hungary, and GB beat Canada - who are ranked 48 places higher than the Hungarians by FIBA. Clearly we're going to stuff the Aussies in that opening-day Olympic game Wink.
