Helen Carroll, sports project director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights in California, which represents Harris, said her case is the latest installment in what she says is a three-decade battle for LGBT awareness.

“You have the ‘80s where coaches, like Portland, spoke out about their no-lesbian policies and no one said anything about that,” Carroll said. “Then you have the ‘90s when sexual orientation is added to nondiscrimination policies and education is put in place. But there is no discipline for those who violated the policies.

“Now, here we are in the 2000s and we look at allegedly the same things happening, and there is now a place for legal action, education and outrage across the country. That shows a 30-year progression of society moving forward on LGBT issues in general, as well as in sports.”
