I've seen the commercial several times, and have always thought that the Siri "voice" in it sounded like an actress rather than coming from a device.

For those with and iPhone 4s, it would be interesting to hear your results with the questions/comments posed in the commercial. I tried it with a couple on my Evo:

1. What Does Orion look like? Well the first responses was a list of possible inputs my Evo thought I mean - all of which had a variation of "Oh Ryan" or "O Ryan." to chose from. I then tried it again and asked "what does the constellation Orion look like?" I then got back a google search results page with various links about the constellation Orion. The very first link was to a blog by "Carly Google" entitled "what does the whole constellation Orion look like?" It also included links to several images of Orion.

2. "What's the best way to Santa Cruz, California?" A little disappointed in this one. I had expected either Google Maps or Google Navigation to kick in. Instead I got a Google search results page with info about Santa Cruz. When I went back and asked "Directions to Santa Cruz, California?" (the way I would have asked knowing how Google voice works), then Google navigation kicked in with the choice of driving, biking, or walking directions from my current location.

Having seen some video of Siri in action made by people with phones, that's the actual voice (at least in the U.S. - I think the British Siri is a male voice).

I think a lawsuit based on a beta version of software will be interesting.

Yeah I thought that was the same voice used in Siri. What I questioned was whether the voice in the commercial was comig from a phone .

Apples' commercials make no mention of Siri being beta.

Siri is worse than useless because it gives the illusion of being useful, causing a user to waste time with it that can otherwise be spent actually looking for the desired information-- instead of struggling to get the phone to understand what you are asking for.

The best use for Siri is to give the phone to the kids to keep them amused at restaurants or in the car. They will ask it stupid questions, and the stupid useless responses will keep them amused until the battery runs dry.

Still, Siri is capable of some interesting responses. The first request I ever made of my new phone was, "Siri, I need hookers and blow." Siri said, "okay, here is a list of thirteen escort services in your location." Another time I said, "Siri, will you marry me?" To which Siri said, "I'm sorry, but that is not within the parameters of my terms of service." I think that many of the answers were "canned"-- guys at Apple sat around thinking of possible B.S. questions, and programming in B.S. answers.

I am also miffed that Siri overrides the ability to dial a number by voice. As far as I'm concerned, Siri was a marketing gimmick.

The far more useful utility on the new iPhones is the voice-to-text feature, which works on all or most of the apps that require text entry. It is fairly intuitive-- makes its share of mistakes, but also learns. It is not a feature of the phone, but of the wireless connection, so sometimes it won't work right if you don't have good coverage. But it works pretty well. I used it all the time.
