Does this mean that they have to pay Cambage even though she isn't playing? Or is it just having to apply her salary to the salary cap total (for some strange reason) but not actually making payments to her?

There are two different kinds of suspended list. There's what New York did with McCarville last season, which immediately takes the player out of playing for that entire season, and takes her salary off the team cap figure. Or there's the version where the player is suspended but you're allowed to 'unsuspend' them at any stage during the season - in which case their salary figure counts against the cap all year (which is what Tulsa will want to do with Cambage so that she can join the team after the Olympics). But you still don't actually pay the player until she shows up.

In Tulsa's case, unless some highly-paid free agents or trades are coming, all it'll probably do is push them up towards the salary cap minimum anyway. They've got no cap issues to worry about.

Are there any teams that might sign Swoopes?

I realize no one would take a chance last year, but she proved she still has some game.

For instance if you're SA would you rather have Swoopes or Hodges? Conn Swoopes or Hightower?

Does PX have a decent 2 off the bench or Washington?

NY? Atlanta?

Is she done or does someone giver her vet minimum?

Swoopes never seemed to want to play for the minimum, which is part of why she ended up in Tulsa in the first place. So I doubt she ends up anywhere else (which apparently means she'll end up nowhere).

Overseas Update: Kayla Pedersen

“I'm just excited for another opportunity to work hard and a chance to build up the Tulsa program,” Pedersen said. “I've been working on my all around game which includes post skills, drives, pull-ups and shooting. I feel that my post skills have improved because my overseas team has me playing as a post, so I have been able to get more reps in at that position.”

Kayla Pedersen leaves Good Angels Košice

Quote:
Pedersen herself wasn’t satisfied with her performances after Christmas break and accepted club’s decision without any objections. In the last five Euroleague games she averaged just 1,4 points which was far below her 8point standard she had delivered in previous encounters.

1.4 points a game for 5 games and there is no talk of injury? Yikes.

Sounds like Holt will be returning to Tulsa. From an article on the team's Facebook page: "The most exciting thing about this upcoming season having a permanent coach, learning his system and getting ready to compete,” Holt said. “My expectation for the team is to have good team chemistry that will lead to more wins on the court.”

The Shock issued this statement this afternoon: "We will have 15 players in camp. As of now here is the scheduled players that will be attending: Chante Black, Karima Christmas, Amber Holt, Tiffany Jackson (Jones), Temeka Johnson, Jennifer Lacy, Ivory Latta, Chanel Mokango, Jene Morris, Abi Olajuwon, Kayla Pedersen, Scholanda Robinson (Dorrell) and Shanna Zolmman. We still have a few roster spots remaining that will be filled with our 2012 draft class. "

So either they're just assuming that RFAs Zolman/Crossley and Holt will eventually sign some kind of contract with them or, more likely, the Shock PR department is just as inept as last season and doesn't bother to tell anyone about certain re-signings.

I take it this statement means the Shock are done with free agency. Kinda hard to predict the lineup from this crew

Johnson/Latta
Holt/Robinson
Pedersen/Christmas/Zolman(?)
Jackson/Lacy
Black/Olajuwon

Suspended: Cambage
Out: Mokango, Morris
Most vulnerable to be
replaced by draft picks: Christmas/Zolman/Olajuwan

Could envision end of
season lineup as follows:

Johnson/Latta/Prahalis
Holt/Robinson
Pedersen/Christmas
Jackson/Lacy
Cambage/Black

TJohnson/Latta
Holt/Robinson/SJohnson
Pedersen/Christmas
Jackson/Lacy
Cambage/Black

Johnson/Latta
Holt/Robinson
Stricklen/Pedersen/Christmas
Jackson/Lacy
Cambage/Black

Johnson/Latta
Holt/Robinson
Pedersen/Christmas
Jackson/Lacy/GJohnson
Cambage/Black

Overseas Update: Chante Black

Quote:
After a year on injured reserve, Chante Black is showing no signs of a back injury that kept her out of the WNBA in 2011 as she just completed a dominant season overseas.

Black appeared in 19 games in China for Shandong this off-season, averaging 16.5 points, 12.4 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 1.3 steals on 56.1 percent shooting from the field.

Despite being absent for a year, Black will join familiar teammates Tiffany Jackson, Ivory Latta, Amber Holt and Jennifer Lacy while adapting to newcomers Temeka Johnson, Karima Christmas and Kayla Pedersen. Black will be expected to fill the rebounding and shot-blocking void left by Elizabeth Cambage’s absence for the first half of the season as she trains for the 2012 Olympics with her Australian teammates.

PG: Johnson/Latta
SG: SRobinson/Zolman/draft pick
SF: Pederson/Holt
PF: Jackson/Lacy
C: Black/Olajuwon*
*released when Cambage arrives

I noticed that the "Overseas Update: Chante Black" article mentions Karima Christmas but does not mention Shanna Zolman.

Does Chante Black have to be re-signed, I was looking through a few threads from last season and it was mentioned she was suspended because of her injury, so if her contract was suspended and she was not waived, wouldn't she just play out the final year or years of her contract.

So move this over from the other thread. My thought on lineup at this point:

PG: T.Johnson/I.Latta
SG: A.Holt/R.Williams
SF: K.Pedersen/S.Dorrell or J. Morris
PF: T.Jackson/J. Lacy
C: C.Black/G.Johnson/V.Baugh

with Lacy or Baugh disappearing when Cambage returns.

Still haven't heard anything about Zolman/Crossley?

Much better roster than what Nick came up with. I think Baugh/Kizer should be a good battle in camp. I'm guessing Morris gets cuts early, but I'm not sure how well she played last year.

Isn't Christmas playing well overseas while Pedersen isn't doing so well? So yikes...

I posted this on the other thread--cut and pasted here where it makes more sense. javascript:emoticon('Laughing') My first impression was that Tulsa could have 3 picks make the team. Looks like Tulsa has 17 players right now w/ draft picks and w/o Liz. They announced earlier that they were bringing 15 to camp so they may be making some cuts soon depending on overseas play. Right now they've got 8 posts, I'm guessing Tiff, Chante, Glory, and Jen make the squad. That leaves Kizer, Baugh, Mokango, and Olajuwon fighting for a spot. And whoever gets the fifth post spot will have to outplay one of the first four mentioned to stay with the team when Liz comes back. TJ and Ivory for PG's and Williams as a combo should make the squad. Petersen and Dorrell look likely to make the final roster. Holt, Zolmman, Morris and Christmas could be fighting for the last spot. If Williams looks good enough in camp to be the backup PG, Latta could be in that perimeter roster battle. If MSP actually keeps their later round picks and brings them to camp, I could see Wojta(sp?) getting cut and picked up by the Shock for a tryout.

She is the reason I'm a bigger fan, I always liked a few of the players but Glory has been my favorite College player since she joined the Vols and now that she is with the Shock (as well as Vicki) I have to support them..

Christmas averaged 20 pts and 10 rbs in 32 min per game playing in the Israeli league. She was a first team all-star.

Im not a Tameka fan at all. But i just dont think that a PG that averages almost the same amount of turnovers as assists last year should be a starting PG.. So i think that Kloppenburg is going with the safest bet.

The basic sentence "Dixon appeared in 32 games and averaged 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds in 29.4 minutes a game" makes you wonder why, even if you've never seen her play.

On the other hand, Olajuwon's never seemed to have much talent beyond being a goon, so that part of the release I've got no problem with (especially considering all those bigs they picked up in the draft).

Klop knows that every team needs at least one UConn player to win games and championships. So he added Dixon. (not that she's the Uconn player that's going to help in that regard but happy she's at least getting a chance to show what she can possibly do).

I don't think so, which makes this even more shocking even though its a training camp contract.

Hey if shitty point guards like Riley, Bobbitt, Marion Jones, etc can make the league, there is no reason why Dixon can't. She's just as good a player as those other players. Give the girl a shot, you never know, she might just impress you a little. Very Happy

It is sad that they are so far down in personnel and victories that they have to announce training camp contract signings of players with no professional experience with "The Tulsa Shock continue to build through free agency".

If Dixon (undrafted) is as good as Riley (#8 in 2010) and Bobbitt (#15 in 2008) WNBA scouts and GMs really overlooked her. Or else she has developed a lot since graduation last year.

I believe Christmas will make it. She had a few good games last season and that is difficult as a rookie on a team like Tulsa. Still a fan and still hoping for them to get better, though so far not impressed with the roster. Is he actually planning on being the worst team next year to have the best chance for the number #1 pick. I don't think that is going to be difficult, but at least plan on winning MORE than four games. And, I don't get not at least giving training camp contracts to some players who have done well overseas.

I don't believe Olajuwon is a goon but not a big fan of watching her play, so no problem with her being cut. We should be able to get better posts than Abi.

EDIT: either it posts before I finish writing or my posts don't post for ten minutes.......and it is not Rebkell, just my system

Christmas has a shot--she will have to beat out Holt at the 3 or beat out Morris, Zolman, and Williams at the 2. Holt was the best perimeter defender last year, they may not want to give that up even though she's not much of an offensive weapon. SG looks really unsettled. I assume Dorrell has the inside track but I expect training camp will be wide open. Tulsa has to find a consistent shooter from outside to be competitive.

Im not a Tameka fan at all. But i just dont think that a PG that averages almost the same amount of turnovers as assists last year should be a starting PG.. So i think that Kloppenburg is going with the safest bet.

we pretty much interpret things the way we want to.... don't we... and once we formulate an opinion on a player... we search for things to rationalize that opinion....

truth is latta averaged the same amount of to's as sue bird... and just an assist and a half less than bird.... but that doesn't matter... does it.... cause we've already made our minds up as to what latta is....

3,2 assists and 2,88 turnovers and then 4,9 and 2,35. Thats not even close.. But hey you have your opinion about a starting PG and i have mine so no hard feelings. We will see who the starting PG of the Shock is at the start of the season Wink

Note: If you look at my past posts about Tameka Johnson you will also see that i do not think she was a starting PG either. Tbh i almost hated her with the Mercury

Go Rima! She's a player who finds multiple non-stat captured ways to add value. She came into college with a defensive mind-set already in place and sacrificed offensive stats to become the defensive stopper. She creates loose balls through deflections, grabs loose balls through hustle and athleticism and keeps rebounds alive when she can't pull them down herself. Would love for her to regain her 3 pt shot - she showed capability by leading her college squad in 3 pt percentage sophomore and junior years. I'm convinced that if she's advised to make that a priority for staying in the league, she could (a la Swin Cash in 2010). Rima can guard taller players at SF due to her strength and leaping ability.

LOL Michelle. Yes, an A/TO % barely over 1 (Latta) should not be compared favorably with an A/TO % over 2 (Bird). Plus, this past season was Bird's worst assist season statistically, as she was asked to shoot a lot more.

I would not be surprised for Latta to get as much or more of the PG minutes compared to Tameka. TJ seems to have some factor that could be referred to as "value subtract" as she's been traded around like a hot potato. Can't say if it's mostly poor defense related to short stature or an intangible in the locker room. I'm definitely no fan of 'bug eyes' (Latta) and we'll see if the Shock pick of Glory Johnson over both Shenise Johnson and Sammy P was a good pick. Power Forward was already the position the team was most competitive at, with Tiffany Jackson and Kayla Pedersen, and the other 4 spots needed to be seriously shored up.
